NYUMBANI

After 3 long years in prison, Hugo is most excited to return to his best friend and business partner Leslie who has been holding the fort at the Nyumbani Lounge. A haven for black people in 1930s Britain. Having spent such a long time away, is Hugo prepared to receive a culture shock in a place he once saw as safe? And what hidden secrets lurk in the shadows of this lively and upbeat community?

Step into the world of the Nyumbani Lounge, an immersive bar experience.

First developed as part of the Barbican Open lab project and performed in their Pit Theatre, Nyumbani is an immersive production. It succeeds in getting the audience on its feet; dancing, clapping and cheering to original music. The play follows the owners struggle to keep the bar afloat, achievements of the first black lawyer, the role of an informant and the darker side of life. Dance, physical theatre and folk tales encompasses the character's journeys, allowing for a non traditional approach to the storytelling and unique atmosphere of the piece.
